The Dominican Republic has 26 Blue Flag Beaches

The Blue Flag was originally a symbol of an environmental awareness initiative in which French school children were invited to write a message and put it in a plastic bottle, along with their names, and the name of the nearest beach.

These bottles were then collected by the French military, and flown out to sea where they were dropped.

The idea was that the messages would drift back to shore where they would land at different points along the coast to where they originated, thereby highlighting the problem of dumping litter into the world's oceans, and the impact that this has, not just locally, but for communities miles away too.

Unfortunately for the school children, very few of the bottles were ever seen again - possibly meaning that these bottles ended up even much further away than originally anticipated, making the problem, not just a cause for concern for a country, but a global problem, as the oceans of the world can deposit litter from one country, all the way across the ocean to another country or even to another continent.

In a roundabout way, this initiative led to the formulation of the Blue Flag.

The motto of the Blue Flag is:

“We educate to protect.

To protect not just our environment but the people who live in it, the communities who depend on it, the businesses who profit from it, and the ecosystems which rely on it!”

A world-renowned award trusted by millions around the globe, the Blue Flag program is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In order to qualify for this prestigious award, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety-related and access-related criteria must be met and maintained.

Following the award, the owners/operators accept full responsibility to ensure continued compliance with all of these criteria.

Through close collaboration with our members on any and all issues they may have, the Foundation for Environmental Education works tirelessly to ensure the program's expansion, and that the unrivalled standards of the Blue Flag are maintained internationally.

The Blue Flag is the international standard for the quality, care, condition, beauty, and maintenance of beaches all around the world.

The Dominican Republic has more Blue Flag beaches than all of the other countries in the Caribbean combined.
